Ouya confirms game console will launch with Jelly Bean | Android ...
The Android-powered Ouya?game console is still on schedule according to the developers' latest update, and they've confirmed that it will launch with Jelly Bean. It wouldn't be surprising to see Android 4.2 folded in before the planned launch early next year, even though that version was just unveiled a few days ago. Apparently the Ouya?folks?have been busy talking with developers over the last few months, which is key considering porting high-resolution games to the big screen and optimizing controls for Ouya's hardware will be key to its initial success.?
To that end, they've outlined a few tips for developers in advance of the December launch of the Ouya SDK. For example, the gamepad will have a single-finger touchpad and a button for system-wide access to shutting down or quitting a game, but none of the familiar buttons like back or menu. Apps should be ready to run at 720p, 1080p, and 1080i resolutions. Notifications aren't employed, and all games are effectively free (though laden with ads and in-app purchases as the game creators see fit). Finally, Ouya reminds app-makers that the system is built for Tegra, and that anyone itching to get their game optimized should test with an Nvidia-powered?Android tablet.?
As for the hardware, they've got the circuit boards printed, and are busy optimizing software and preparing dev kits for those that got in early.?

Taking action to find homes for at-risk wild horses
Protect Mustangs is working with members of the public to find homes for all the wild horses who were not adopted during the recent Bureau of Land Management (BLM) internet adoption. The unadopted are at risk of being sold to pro-slaughter people like Tom Davis.
?We are reaching out to the public through Facebook and Twitter to find adopters,? explains Anne Novak, executive director of Protect Mustangs. ?People across the country are expressing interest in adopting these great horses. I don?t know why the BLM isn?t marketing the adoption program better.?
BLM?s three strike program
America?s living legends receive a strike against them every time they are offered for adoption. Just living at a short term holding facility with a tag around their neck counts as a strike if they are not adopted. Then if they are offered on the internet and not adopted they get another strike. If they are offered for adoption at an event and don?t find their person then they get their third strike . . . It?s a cruel system. After three strikes the federally protected wild horses can be sold to anyone who signs on the dotted line that they won?t sell them to slaughter or for use as rodeo stock. The BLM doesn?t check that the buyers are complying so it?s a free for all.
?If indigenous wild horses are not adopted then they will be shipped out to the Midwest where they are at-risk of being sold by the truckloads?even the one year olds,? states Novak. ?With the recent E.U. crackdown on American horse meat, riddled with toxic substances, we are concerned wild horses face an increased risk of going to slaughter because they have never been given substances such as bute.?

- Stall, corral, etc. that is 6? tall on all sides with access to feed, water and adequate shelter for anything 2 years or older. The stall/corral height is 5? for a yearling and 4.5? for a burro. (This area is only required until animal is gentled, not for the life of the animal.)
- Stall, corral, etc. must be made of protrusion-free materials, (EX) Wood, Pipe, Cattle Panels. Barb wire is not allowed in the area that is being used for gentling the animal.
- Covered stock trailer. Covered stock trailer refers to: solid top, pipe rails, tarp, etc. BLM will not load into two-horse or drop-ramp trailers.

Caro, Shadid among National Book Award finalists
NEW YORK (AP) ? Robert Caro, Junot Diaz and the late Anthony Shadid were among the finalists announced Wednesday for the National Book Awards.
Other nominees included the novelists Dave Eggers and Louise Erdrich and nonfiction writers Anne Applebaum and Katherine Boo. Twenty authors, five each in four competitive categories, were picked. The winners will be announced Nov. 14 at a ceremony hosted by the commentator and performer Faith Salie.
Major New York publishers have complained in recent years that such high profile books as Jonathan Franzen's "Freedom" and Jeffrey Eugenides' "The Marriage Plot" have been overlooked in favor of more obscure titles. But this year's picks include some of the most talked about literary works of 2012, from Caro's "The Passage of Power," the fourth of his epic Lyndon Johnson series; to Diaz's "This is How You Lose Her," a series of stories about love; to Katherine Boo's "Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity," widely praised as a masterpiece of nonfiction narrative.
The nominees include five Pulitzer Prize winners (Caro, Shadid and Anne Applebaum among them), a National Book Award winner (Caro) and two MacArthur "genius" grant recipients, most recently Diaz. Judges also picked five debut books, including Kevin Powers' "The Yellow Birds," which some critics have cited as a rare major novel about the Iraq war; and Domingo Martinez's "The Boy Kings of Texas," a memoir. Panels of fellow writers that change each year choose the awards.
The NBAs are administered by the nonprofit National Book Foundation, which has long sought to strike a balance between making the awards a mark of literary excellence and of popular appeal. Past hosts of the ceremony have included Steve Martin and Garrison Keillor and this year's picks were revealed Wednesday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."
Book foundation executive director Harold Augenbraum said that no changes were made in the selection process, but that extra steps were added to prevent a fiasco like in 2011, when a miscommunication between judges and the foundation led to Lauren Myracle's being mistakenly announced as a young people's literature finalist. Her nomination was then withdrawn, a humiliation for the author and an embarrassment for the awards.
"When the panel chair called in we asked for author, title, and publisher," Augenbraum said of this year's process. "Then we pulled our copies of the books, checked the information, and then later a different staff person called the panel chair back to verify all the information."
The fiction finalists were Diaz, Powers, Eggers ("A Hologram for the King"), Erdrich ("The Round House") and Ben Fountain, for "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk." Besides Caro, Martinez and Boo, nonfiction nominees were Applebaum for "Iron Curtain" and Shadid for the memoir "House of Stone." Shadid, a New York Times foreign correspondent who previously worked for the Washington Post and The Associated Press, died of an asthma attack in February at age 43.
In poetry, the finalists were David Ferry's "Bewilderment: New Poems and Translations," Cynthia Huntington's "Heavenly Bodies," Tim Seibles's "Fast Animal," Alan Shapiro's "Night of the Republic" and Susan Wheeler's "Meme."
The young people's literature finalists: William Alexander's "Goblin Secrets," Carrie Arcos's "Out of Reach," Patricia McCormick's "Never Fall Down," Eliot Schrefer's "Endangered" and Steve Sheinkin's "Bomb: The Race to Build ? and Steal ? the World's Most Dangerous Weapon."

MINGORA, Pakistan (AP) ? Fourteen-year-old Malala Yousufzai was admired across a battle-scarred region of Pakistan for exposing the Taliban's atrocities and advocating for girls' education in the face of religious extremists. On Tuesday, the Taliban nearly killed her to quiet her message.
A gunman walked up to a bus taking children home from school in the volatile northern Swat Valley and shot Malala in the head and neck. Another girl on the bus was also wounded.
The young activist was airlifted by helicopter to a military hospital in the frontier city of Peshawar. A doctor in the city of Mingora, Tariq Mohammad, said her wounds weren't life-threatening, but a provincial information minister said after a medical board examined the girl that the next few days would be crucial.
Malala began writing a blog when she was just 11 under the pseudonym Gul Makai for the BBC about life under the Taliban, and began speaking out publicly in 2009 about the need for girls' education ? which the Taliban strongly opposes. The extremist movement was quick to claim responsibility for shooting her.
"This was a new chapter of obscenity, and we have to finish this chapter," Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan by telephone.
The shooting provoked outrage across the country, angering Pakistanis who have seen a succession of stories about violence against women by the Taliban.
"This attack cannot scare us nor the courageous Malala. This cowardly act cannot deter Malala to give up her efforts," said Azizul Hasan, one of the girl's cousins.
Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf condemned the attack and called her a daughter of Pakistan. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland called the shooting "barbaric" and "cowardly."
Leila Zerrougui, the U.N. special representative for children in armed conflict, condemned the attack "in the harshest terms." ''Education is a fundamental right for all children," she said in a statement. The Taliban "must respect the right to education of all children, including girls, to go to school and live in peace."
The attack displayed the viciousness of Islamic militants in the Swat Valley, where the military conducted a major operation in 2009 to clear out insurgents, and a reminder of the challenges the government faces in keeping the area free of militant influence.
In her BBC blog, Malala wrote about not wearing her uniform to school after officials warned it might attract the Taliban's attention, and how many other students moved out of the valley after the Taliban issued an edict banning girls from school. She wrote about the Taliban movement had kept her family from going out after sunset.
While chairing a children's assembly supported by UNICEF in the valley last year, the then-13-year-old championed a greater role for young people.
"Girl members play an active role," she said, according to an article on the U.N. organization's website. "We have highlighted important issues concerning children, especially promoting girls' education in Swat."
She was nominated last year for the International Children's Peace Prize, which is organized by the Dutch organization KidsRights to highlight the work of children around the world.
Malala was shot on her way home from a school run by her father, Ziauddin, who is also known in the valley for promoting education of girls.
The bus was about to leave the school grounds in Mingora, the largest city in Swat Valley, when a bearded man approached it and asked which one of the girls was Malala, said Rasool Shah, Mingora's police chief. Another girl pointed to Malala, but the activist denied it was her and the gunmen then shot both of the girls, the police chief said.
The Swat Valley ? nicknamed the Switzerland of Pakistan ? was once a popular tourist destination for Pakistanis. Honeymooners used to vacation in the numerous hotels dotted along the river of the same name running through it. But the Taliban's near-total takeover of the valley just 175 miles (280 kilometers) from the capital in 2008 shocked many Pakistanis, who considered militancy to be a far-away problem in Afghanistan or Pakistan's rugged tribal regions.
Militants began asserting their influence in the valley in 2007 ? part of a wave of al-Qaida and Taliban fighters expanding their reach from safe havens near the Afghan border.
By 2008 they controlled much of it and began meting out rules and their own brand of justice. During about two years of its rule, the Taliban forced men to grow beards, restricted women from going to the bazaar, whipped women they considered immoral and beheaded opponents.
Taliban militants in the region also destroyed around 200 schools. Most were girls' institutions, though some prominent boys' schools were struck as well. The private school owned and operated by Malala's father was temporarily closed under the Taliban.
At one point, the Taliban said they were halting female education, a move that echoed their militant brethren in neighboring Afghanistan who during their rule barred girls from attending school.
While the Pakistani military managed to flush out the insurgents during the military operation, the Taliban's top leadership escaped, leaving many of the valley's residents on edge.
Kamila Hayat, a senior official of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, said Malala's activism sent a global message that Pakistani girls could fight for their rights. But she also worried that Tuesday's shooting would prevent other parents from letting their children speak out against the Taliban.
"This is an attack to silence courage through a bullet," Hayat said. "These are the forces who want to take us to the dark ages."
The problems of young women in Pakistan were the focus of a separate case before the high court, which ordered a probe Tuesday into an alleged barter of seven girls to settle a blood feud in a remote southwestern district. The tradition of families exchanging unmarried girls to settle feuds is banned under Pakistani law but still practiced in the country's more conservative, tribal areas.
A tribal council ordered the barter in early September in the Dera Bugti district of Baluchistan province, the district deputy commissioner, Saeed Faisal, told the court. He did not know the girls' ages but local media reported they were between 4 and 13 years old.
The Advocate General for the province could not confirm the incident.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry ordered Faisal to ensure that all members of the tribal council ? and a local lawmaker ? who belongs to one of the groups believed involved ? appear in court on Wednesday.

Stocks slip after IMF cuts outlook; earnings eyed

Updated at 11:05 a.m. ET: Stocks edged lower Tuesday even after the IMF issued the latest forecast of slower global growth, leaving investors little reason to buy equities before the start of the U.S. quarterly earnings season.
The International Monetary Fund cut its projected global output for 2012 to 3.3 percent from 3.5 percent and forecast 3.6 percent growth next year. The international lender warned that a lack of action by U.S. and European policymakers to fix their economic problems could extend the current slump.
The IMF warnings come on the heels of a lowered forecast for growth in the East Asia-Pacific region by the World Bank on concerns China's slowdown could last longer than expected.
Repeated warnings about the economy have left investors cautious before what could be a disappointing earnings season after a rally that has pushed the S&P 500 up nearly 16 percent so far in 2012, lifting it to its highest in nearly five years.
But the market has remained stuck in a range for the past few days as investors wait to see how if there are any earnings surprises and what companies expect in the fourth quarter.
"You really have the headwind of slowing economic growth. The IMF warning is just another piece of evidence of that against the backdrop of incredibly loose monetary policy just holding everything in place," said Rick Meckler, president of investment firm LibertyView Capital Management in New York.
"There isn't really the earnings strength to take the market out of this range," he added.
Analysts forecast third-quarter earnings of S&P 500 companies would fall 2.3 percent from the year-ago quarter, according to Thomson Reuters data, which would be the first drop in U.S. quarterly earnings in three years.
Earnings season gets under way when Dow component Alcoa Inc reports quarterly earnings. Analysts expect Alcoa's third-quarter results to show the aluminum company broke even, down from a profit of 15 cents per share a year earlier, according to Thomson Reuters data.
Among large multinationals that have warned about earnings, citing weakness in Europe and China, are FedEx Corp, Caterpillar Inc and Hewlett-Packard Co.
Investors were also eyeing a euro zone finance ministers' meeting and a visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Greece for any signs of progress in dealing with the region's debt crisis.
On Monday, the euro zone finance ministers and the IMF held a "thorough and robust" debate on Greece but failed to make significant progress in deciding how best to get the country back on track with its bailout program.
According to data, 91 companies in the S&P 500 have issued negative outlooks versus 21 positive pre-announcements, for a ratio of 4.3, the weakest showing since the third quarter of 2001.

Genetic mutation linked to psychiatric disease and obesity
ScienceDaily (Oct. 8, 2012) ? McGill researchers have identified a small region in the genome that conclusively plays a role in the development of psychiatric disease and obesity. The key lies in the genomic deletion of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, a nervous system growth factor that plays a critical role in brain development.
To determine the role of BDNF in humans, Prof. Carl Ernst, from McGill's Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, screened over 35,000 people referred for genetic screening at clinics and over 30,000 control subjects in Canada, the U.S., and Europe. Overall, five individuals were identified with BDNF deletions, all of whom were obese, had a mild-moderate intellectual impairment, and had a mood disorder. Children had anxiety disorders, aggressive disorders, or attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), while post-pubescent subjects had anxiety and major depressive disorders. Subjects gradually gained weight as they aged, suggesting that obesity is a long-term process when BDNF is deleted.
"Scientists have been trying to find a region of the genome which plays a role in human psychopathology, searching for answers anywhere in our DNA that may give us a clue to the genetic causes of these types of disorders," says Prof. Ernst, who is also a researcher at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute. "Our study conclusively links a single region of the genome to mood and anxiety."
The findings, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, reveal for the first time the link between BDNF deletion, cognition, and weight gain in humans. BDNF has been suspected to have many functions in the brain based on animal studies, but no study had shown what happens when BDNF is missing from the human genome. This research provides a step toward better understanding human behaviour and mood by clearly identifying genes that may be involved in mental disorders.
"Mood and anxiety can be seen like a house of cards. In this case, the walls of the house represent the myriad of biological interactions that maintain the structure," says Ernst, "Studying these moving parts can be tricky, so teasing apart even a single event is important. Linking a deletion in BDNF conclusively to mood and anxiety really tells us that it is possible to dissect the biological pathways involved in determining how we feel and act.
We now have a molecular pathway we are confident is involved in psychopathology," adds Ernst, "Because thousands of genes are involved in mood, anxiety, or obesity, it allows us to root our studies on a solid foundation. All of the participants in our study had mild-moderate intellectual disability, but most people with these cognitive problems do not have psychiatric problems -- so what is it about deletion of BDNF that affects mood? My hope now is to test the hypothesis that boosting BDNF in people with anxiety or depression might improve brain health."

Ch?vez reelection at risk as Venezuela's oil heartland moves on
In Venezuela's oil-rich east, some say the administration's management of natural resources ? including oil spills and refinery accidents ? has pushed them toward the opposition.

Though President Ch?vez has spent years focusing on the region?s strategic importance, cultivating support for his party and its policies of ?21st century socialism,? his campaign has hit resistance here. And it has become one of the places where opposition candidate Henrique Capriles Radonski?stands to pick up votes when the country goes to the polls on Sunday.
Over the course of his nearly 14 years as President, Ch?vez has made it clear he wants supporters of his socialist revolution to control access to the region?s quarter trillion barrels of oil reserves. But with a record of oil spills, a rising accident rate in refineries, and social problems like the continent's highest murder rates and weekly blackouts, Ch?vez?s time in office may be working against him, weighing on his public support here, and across much of the country.
"It's very tight, and both have very similar chances of winning," says I?aki Sagarzazu, a Venezuelan teaching at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. "It will come down to who mobilizes the most."
Mr. Sagarzazu says that Ch?vez support has moved from urban to rural areas over the years. That?s left the president with a base in the plains while urban areas have moved largely to the opposition, which this year is supporting Mr. Capriles, governor of a state that includes part of the capital, Caracas.
Here in this region, too, people have shifted their support away from the incumbent.
"He never does what he says," says Reina, a mother of 11 and full-time homemaker, who was shy about talking to the press. She says she has supported Ch?vez for years, but is still undecided as to whether she will give him her vote again in a race that?s too close to call, with pollsters and analysts divided on which candidate is the most likely winner.
Environmental and labor woes
Venezuela is experiencing 18 percent inflation and there is a sense that neighbors, such as Brazil, have emerged more successfully from poverty. Such concerns are countering Ch?vez's emotional connection with the people and his ability to attract support with populist programs such as free homes. In the oil region, environmental issues have also affected the president's standing. One case is Monagas state, where the president received 71 percent support in the 2006 election.
A pipeline burst in the state Feb. 4, spilling thousands of barrels of crude into the Guarapiche river. Local opposition press reported that for the first hours of the disaster, the state oil company failed to halt the flow, in part because some employees were away in the capital for a rally commemorating the 20th anniversary of Ch?vez leading a failed military coup.
The spill forced managers to halt water withdrawals from the river, leaving about 200,000 residents of the city of Maturin with limited running water for six weeks.

Hi David, thanks for your response.
With most programmes I use, a deletion removes the file to either the recycle bin or to oblivion. And some offer you the option to chose which deletion routing your prefer. In either case the file is gone, unless you specifically restore it from the recycle bin.
I have no problem with FTM not offering the oblivion option, but would hope the developers will eventually allow the user to set a default of recycle bin or not, rather than having to make the choice for each individual deletion.
Bottom line however is my concern is not process or even wasted space, but whether there are functional or performance implications to having deleted files still hanging around.
