Options action suggests Apple earnings will not roil its shares

NEW YORK/CHICAGO | Tue Jul 23, 2013 6:04pm BST

NEW YORK/CHICAGO (Reuters) - Apple Inc is not expected to show a big post-earnings swing when it reports fiscal third-quarter results after the closing bell on Tuesday, but this could also mean investors are under-hedged in case the company delivers a shock.

The options market is pricing in a potential move up or down of 4 to near 5 percent in Apple's stock price following the results. This is in line with a historic average move of about 4.3 to 4.4 percent over the past four quarters.

"Even though the implied move is relatively in line with historical movements, it is our belief that implied volatility is too high ahead of the announcement and that the stock will move less than expected," said Andrew Keene, president and founder of options trading firm KeeneOnTheMarket.com in Chicago.

Implied volatility measures the perceived risk of future stock movements conveyed by option prices.

"Google and Netflix both massively undershot their implied moves on earnings and we will be trading Apple expecting the same," Keene said.

Apple shares were down 0.8 percent at $422.82 on the Nasdaq early on Tuesday afternoon.

The stock's post-earnings moves have been all over the map in the last year: down 4.3 percent the day after earnings came out in July 2012, down 1 percent in October 2012, a 12 percent drop in January 2013, and no move in April.

"Normally what happens into an earnings event is that implied volatility will run higher as traders and investors look to protect themselves against any large moves in the stock. We did not see that this quarter," said Steve Place, founder of options analytics firm investingwithoptions.com in Austin, Texas.

The iPhone and iPad maker is expected to post a smaller quarterly profit and its financial report may come under intense scrutiny. Revenue is expected to come in flat, while earnings per share is expected to fall by 21 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data.

The implied volatility for the next 30 days for Apple stands at 29.4 percent, according to options analytics firm Livevol. That number compared with the same measure from the past seven earnings cycles is very low, said Ophir Gottlieb, managing director of Livevol Inc.

"This tells us that investors are not expecting large movements and they would be under-hedged if Apple earnings deviated significantly from what is expected," Place said.

Because of this, investors using short-term volatility strategies such as selling options to capture premium going into earnings are exposed to the risk of a larger-than-expected move in the stock compared with previous quarters, Place said.

"If history repeats, it suggests an options bet on a 4 percent move could prove disastrous from either the long or short volatility side," said Adam Warner, contributor at Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Once the most valuable company in the world, Apple's stock price has hovered between $400 and $450 for months, after dropping from record high around $705 in September 2012. The stock has lost nearly 20 percent of its value this year.

The intrinsic value of Apple is estimated at $728, way above the current share price, according to Thomson Reuters' Starmine.

Oil stays under $107 after US home sales fall

Oil marked time below $107 a barrel Tuesday after U.S. sales of previously occupied homes fell and traders awaited a weekly report on America's inventories of crude.

Benchmark crude for September delivery was down 19 cents at $106.75 a barrel at midafternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Oil slid $1.14 on Monday after the government said sales of previously occupied homes in the U.S. slipped 1.2 percent in June to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.08 million. Any sign that the U.S. economic recovery is slowing can cause the oil price to fall.

Wednesday's report on U.S. crude and fuel stockpiles from the Energy Information Administration will be watched for confirmation that the recent trend of falling inventories, which suggests stronger demand, is continuing.

Sharp drops in U.S. crude supplies for the past three weeks have helped propel oil to its highest in about 16 months.

Brent crude, which is traded on the ICE Futures exchange in London, rose 28 cents to $108.43 a barrel.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline added 2.7 cents to $3.021 a gallon.

? Heating oil was almost unchanged at $3.069 a gallon.

? Natural gas gained 2.1 cents to $3.698 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Average Movie Ticket Prices Rise to All-Time High

Movie tickets in the second quarter of 2013 hit the highest price ever, at $8.38 per ticket, according to the National Association of Theater Owners. The average ticket was priced 3.2% higher than in the same quarter last year.

Though interest in 3D films has declined over the past year in North America, filmgoers choosing higher-priced premium tickets including Imax and other large formats for popular tentpoles pushed the average up. ?Iron Man 3? and ?Man of Steel? were among the seven films that made more than $100 million at the domestic box office in the second quarter of the year, as opposed to just three in the same period last year.

With an average of $7.94 in the first quarter, the combined average ticket price for the first half of the year was $8.16.

The average ticket price is calculated by combining normal-priced, 3D and large format tickets, with more of the premium-priced tickets sold in the pre-summer and summer tentpole season.

FBI: Woman kidnapped from San Diego, held as sex slave

By Megan Tevrizian and Christina London, NBCSanDiego.com

A 19-year-old man is accused of kidnapping a woman in San Diego, taking her across the country and keeping her as a sex slave.

NBCSanDiego.com

Brandon Todd, 19, is being held on a federal kidnapping charge.

Brandon Todd is being held on a federal kidnapping charge, after he was taken into police custody July 10.

His capture came after his alleged victim escaped by faking an asthma attack in May and calling police, according to an FBI affidavit.

The ordeal started in April at the Greyhound bus terminal downtown, according to the FBI. The criminal complaint said a 26-year-old woman, who was traveling from San Diego to Florida, met Todd and was coerced into sharing a hotel room with him.

In an affidavit, an FBI agent said Todd threatened to harm the woman and her family if she didn?t comply. He allegedly showed her weapons, told her he had gang connections and destroyed her phone so she couldn?t be tracked.

After two days in the hotel, Todd took the woman cross-country to Naples, N.Y., according to investigators.

According to the FBI, Todd kept her against her will at his grandparents? house, where he repeatedly raped her.

The victim said she was held captive for more than two weeks.

Mexico to meet Panama in Gold Cup semi-finals

July 21, 2013

Mexico left it late but ultimately prevailed 1-0 over Trinidad & Tobago yesterday in Atlanta, setting up a CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-final with Panama who made light work of Cuba in a 6-1 win.

The Mexicans were frustrated by the plucky Caribbeans for 84 minutes, but Raul Jimenez scored from a Miguel Layun cross. The match-winner was far from clinical, coming from a kick that sneaked into the bottom left corner of the net.

"They were tough rivals," Mexico goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco said, ?but we were able to control it and win it at the end."

Orozco said Mexico would be ready for Panama in Texas on Wednesday, having earlier suffered a 2-1 defeat to the central Americans at the pool stage.

"We have a chip on our shoulder and we are going to take revenge against the Panama side," he said.

Earlier, Panama were too good for Cuba despite trailing early when Jose Ciprian Alfonso scored in the 21st minute off a volley.

Gabriel Torres scored twice, including a penalty, in the first half as Panama took a 2-1 lead at the break.

His fellow striker Blas Perez also netted two goals, both in the second half, while defender Carlos Rodriguez and substitute Jairo Jimenez each scored once.

Cuba only scraped into the quarter-finals after an injury time goal in their last group match and their hopes of pulling off an upset effectively ended when Ariel Gonzales was sent off in the 58th minute for a clumsy challenge.

The other two quarter-finals will be held in Baltimore today. - Reuters, July 21, 2013.
